Happy Thanksgiving

This post is pretty simple.

Take a moment, and look around.

Your family and friends could use a “thank you.” Not just a general one, either. Think about something they’ve done and let them know, in three sentences, what you are thankful for.

Then, when you have a moment, thank yourself. You’ve gotten this far, and regardless of the trials that this year has shown you, you got this far.

Being “better” can wait until tomorrow.

Today, just appreciate who you are.

Stand, Take Notice For You and Others

Every moment there is “something.”

If you spend a moment to notice, you’ll never find a dull one.

The insight you bring to the table is necessary for us to get a well-rounded view. The same goes for everyone at the table.

The moment you think you have all the answers is the moment you’ll be too blind to see most of them.


Art is Life

Have you ever considered:

  • That what you see now could reflect how you feel?
  • That perhaps, what you consider artful is a piece of you?
  • When you label something, you miss out on its totality?

Life is art, and art is life.

As people, especially as leaders, navigating the world around us, it is important to notice and be aware of our internal lens.

It affects what and how we see the world and our ability to influence others.

Sleep. Do It If You Want To Maintain Your Earlier Wins.

Go to sleep

4 hours isn’t enough. Neither is 5 or 6. Get 7 hours of sleep.


If you want to maintain influence and mood, you’ll need to sleep. Fatigue increases the chance of erratic behavior. You’ll stop being empathetic and start being moody. You’ll lose focus on the work that matters.

Instead of focusing on being proactive, you’ll fall into the trap of being reactive.

That is the first step in losing influence and impact.

Get some sleep.



We Didn’t Hear It As You Said It

Perception guides what we hear

How I hear your remark is different from how you said it, full stop.

When we communicate, we take our concepts and try to place them into someone else’s¬†head, filled with ideas, emotions, and events we can’t possibly perceive. What we say is always different from what someone else hears.

If that is true, how can we communicate, so people understand us?

  1. Empathize from a place that understands that people hear things differently from how we say them
  2. Shorten, clarify, repeat over and over.

Different is Difficult, And That’s Fine

Being different is difficult, and that is a blessing.

Leading a change for others is hard for a reason. You are asking someone to leave the safety of “how things are done” to follow you and your ideas. They are taking a risk.

So, of course, they are going to push back. It is the person’s job to do that.

It is our job, as leaders, to understand the risk they are taking to the best of our ability and help them feel comfortable taking it.

When people ask “why?” look at that as a blessing. It is an opportunity to see what is important to them and make your concept that much stronger.

Tension is excellent, and maybe an indicator that you are on the right track.
