Pushback Pushes You Up

Hearing “no” stings

When you do the work, when you hear “no” or in some cases “why” it can hurt, especially if you’ve laid the case in a way that makes sense to you.

I’ve had it happen to me before, and I know it sucks. It can start you down the path of negative self-talk rather fast.

One thing I try to keep in mind, however, is that each time this happens, its resistance.

How do you build muscles? Resistance.

Pushback can push you up. And with that in mind, reframe it as an opportunity to get stronger.

One day it is going to count.

Pushback pushes you up.

Sting and Burn

Sometimes people or institutions hurt you. That promotion didn’t happen, the project failed, or your significant other let you down.

It is inevitable. Perfection isn’t sustainable.

After the disappointment, you are left with a choice.

Two options:

  • Step forward, take your lumps, and learn in the process. This is going to sting.  You learn, but you are vulnerable.
  • Step backwards, protect yourself and hope for the best. This is going to burn later, but you have to option to recover and regroup.
